Founded in 1958, the institution is officially a part of Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2004 and changed its name to Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is considered as the international centre of excellence of the School of Economics (ESE) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
