On October 14th 1872, the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Lyon opened its doors to 75 pupils and 17 teachers in an 18th century building in the heart of Lyon. By 1875, the School had 118 pupils of whom 12 were foreigners and almost half from other regions in France. The School originally had just one department, Banking and Commerce, but in 1876 the Silk Weaving department opened in response to industry demand.
"In 1972, the School marked its 100th anniversary with the move to its existing site in Ecully. The last 40 years have seen many exciting developments and rapid expansion. The School’s first modern dual diploma was created in 1978. Its Centre des Entrepreneurs, the precursor to the Incubator, opened in 1984 and 1994 saw the creation of its Chinese subsidiary. The School achieved triple accreditation status in 2005. In 2008, E.M.LYON became EMLYON Business School. The new generation Incubator and the World Entrepreneurship Forum were launched in 2008. A year later, the Executive Education subsidiary EML Executive Development opened and the strategic alliance with Ecole Centrale de Lyon was officially launched. By 2011, the significant international expansion and educational innovations attracted a record number of student applications to EMLYON. The school celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2012-13.
