Welcome to Slovenia!
If you decide to study in Slovenia, you will enjoy its perfect location, with part of its territory by the Alps and part by the sea. Slovenia, member of the European Union since 2004, is also a member of the Schengen Area and the Eurozone. This situation makes Slovenia an ideal destination for international students who would like to attain a higher education degree while discovering the rest of Europe. In addition, students are exempted from paying tuition fees at full-time study programs at public institutions, and enjoy affordable tuition fees at part-time studies and at private institutions.
Higher Education System
Slovenian higher education consists of short-cycle higher vocational education (2-year programmes) and higher education (3 or 4 years of bachelor – first cycle, 1 or 2 years of master – second cycle and 3 years of doctoral programme – third cycle, PhD).
Higher education studies are organised by both public (University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor, University of Primorska) and private universities (University of Nova Gorica), and other higher education institutions, namely at faculties, art academies, and higher vocational colleges. Universities, faculties, and art academies provide study programmes of all cycles: bachelor, master and doctoral (PhD) level. Higher vocational colleges provide, as a rule, the first cycle programmes (undergraduate/bachelor).
The main functions of the universities are education and scientific research and development.

Application, Fees and Visas in Slovenia
Tuition fees vary from one higher education institution to another and per year typically range between:
2000 EUR to 5000 EUR for Bachelor’s degree
2500 EUR to 7500 EUR for Master’s degree
3000 EUR to 12000 EUR Doctorate/PhD.
Who doesn’t pay tuition?
The study of full-time students:
- citizens of the Republic of Slovenia or European Union Member States and
- the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, the Republics of Macedonia and Serbia.
- enrolled in the first and second cycle study programmes at higher education institutions or at study programmes at private higher education institutions that are financed from the public budget do not pay tuition fee. The exception are second cycle study programmes students who have already obtained an education that applies at very least to second level.
Who pays tuition?
You will have to pay tuition if you:
- are from non-EU member countries,
- enroll as a part-time student in first and second level study programmes,
- enroll in a third level programme, to be a PhD student and
- enroll in a private higher education institutions without concession, without public budget funding.
The price list is published on the website of the higher education institutions. As a rule, the tuition fee is paid in a lump sum for each academic year.
